The goal of the workshop is to develop a deeper understanding of the main research agendas taking place in international studies, with a special focus on the research underway at Stockholm and Cornell universities. Seven general, multidisciplinary themes are in focus, which match research agendas taking place in the departments that comprise SU’s SIS and Cornell’s Mario Eunadi Center of International Studies. PhD students, senior researchers, and professors will take part in an interactive format, presenting research and receiving comments and critique. Part of the workshop will involve broader discussion of the future of international studies as a research field/discipline through comparison of different organizational and teaching strategies at Stockholm and Cornell.

The purpose of the event is to begin building a framework for cooperation that will:

  • Strengthen relations between international studies researchers in the two universities
  • Build mutual awareness of research agendas, teaching practices, and thus collaboration opportunities.
  • Benefit our PhD students, who will be exposed to new research topics, theories, and methods.

Suggested themes of the multidisciplinary workshop:

  1. Global and regional governance
  2. International law and international affairs
  3. Theory and methods in international studies
  4. Global security
  5. History and international studies
  6. International studies and media
  7. Global urbanism

The workshop will be chaired by:

Professor Fredrik Logevall, Cornell University (last year’s Pulitzer-prize winner in history with his book 'Embers of War' on the Vietnam War).

Professor Matthew Evangelista, Cornell University (Political Scientist and an expert on Soviet and Russian politics and the relationship between gender, nationalism and war).

Professor Thomas Jonter, Director of Stockholm University Graduate School of International Studies.
