Stockholm University welcomes applicants to an intensive PhD course examining and problematizing US global engagement in the political, security and economic realms. At a time of unprecedented challenges to the international order, the role of the United States in that order is once again up for debate. This course will examine a range of longstanding and current questions about what the US role in the world should, could, and should not be, both from an American and international perspective. The course features Stockholm University’s Osher Fellow in International Studies, Professor Stephen Brooks from Dartmouth College. Professor Brooks will join students in asking such questions as what are the different dimensions and depth of US engagement? Is the US a predatory or benevolent hegemon? Will the US long maintain a leadership position in the international system? What role for partners and rivals in US grand strategy? Professor Brooks has authored several prominent books, including America Abroad (with William Wohlforth), World out of Balance (with William Wohlforth), and The Political Economy of International Security (soon to be published with Princeton University Press). Professor Brooks will be joined by a distinguished group of instructors offering intensive, hands-on interaction with students (see syllabus). This course is offered as part of Stockholm University’s Graduate School of International Studies and is organized in cooperation with the Swedish Institute of International Affairs.
