Martin Ratcovich is a PhD Student from the Faculty of Law, Stockholm University, Sweden. His dissertation addresses international law, and more specifically, the law of the sea, refugee law, human rights law and international maritime law. One aim of his project is to examine how the law of the sea can be interpreted and applied as an integrated part of the legal system of international law (systemic integration). The title of his project is International law and the notion of place of safety for disembarkation of persons rescued at sea.

 

Martin has studied international law at the Faculty of Law, Lund University, Sweden, and maritime law at the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law, Faculty of Law, Oslo University, Norway, and at a joint program of Lund University and World Maritime University (WMU). In 2008 he closely followed the work of the United Nations International Law Commission (ILC) in his function as intern assistant to the Nordic Member of the ILC. After receiving his master degree in Law from Lund University in 2008, Martin has worked as a Law Clerk, as a Legal Officer at the Swedish Coast Guard Headquarters and at the Ministry of Defense of Sweden. He has participated in various international negotiations and commissions for legislative review and preparation of new legislation, particularly in the maritime field. Martin’s research interests include international law, maritime affairs and security policy.
