Her research is concerned with urban change in the context of global processes and how these processes are experienced and lived in local urban contexts. She has a special interest on the urban South and her empirical focus is on African cities. She has examined the multiple forms of influence used by disadvantaged urban groups, including collective organizing and the transnational grassroots networks with significance for urban politics. Lindell is the coordinator of a research project titled ‘Urban Imaginaries’ which examines how internationally circulating urban models and ideals shape interventions and policies in specific cities and reshape opportunities for different groups of residents. Her publications include book chapters, journal articles, edited thematic issues in journals and the edited book Africa’s Informal Workers: Collective Agency, Alliances and Transnational Organizing in Urban Africa (2010).
